Fredericton will be playing host to numerous events on the weekend of February 3 through 5. The weekend will kick off with the usual happy hour, though it is suggested that this takes QSLS members and associates to UNB's Grad House on their way to the Banff Mountain Film Festival, Night #1.

This will serve as a great warm up to the Olympic Symphonium and Hot Toddy show taking place at the Wilmot United Church (http://shiveringsongs.com/).

Saturday will include market time, outdoor leisure pursuits (weather dependent) followed by more film and song.

Sunday morning, Alan Jeffries will be playing the Bluegrass Brunch at the Boyce Farmers market.

All in all, a solid weekend of dynamic leisure is expected. Hope to see you all there.

Greetings Brothers and Sisters!!

It's that time of year of year again to hit the stores, fuel the economy, find that perfect gift for the special people in our lives and try and relax with our loved ones while product consuming chaos ensues all around us. It's also a time of year important to sports fans, in particular hockey fans. Yes Matt Steeves, I am talking about you! When different countries from around the world, field a team of future NHL stars to lace em up and battle it out in the famed IIHF World Junior Championship. What better way to relax with loved ones than World Junior Hockey in HD!! This year's tourney happens to take place in Alberta, a split venue between Calgary and Edmonton. While Edmonton will be playing host to the round robin games, Calgary will host the playoff spots.

This year's tournament is particularly special to me because due to the nature of my work, I will get to witness first hand what this year's Team Canada is capable of. For those of you who don't know I am a Facility Operator with the Town of Banff (or rink rat). The town recently completed construction of a brand new 30 million dollar facility. Seeing as how they are desperate to make back the tax payers money and Banff is somewhat of a destination, the new facility is quite the attractant for hockey players. We already hosted the Calgary Flames just before the 2011-12 regular season kicked off, and we are set to host the Minnesota Wild in January. However, today we will host the newly formulated 2012 World Junior-Canada Team. They will be at our arena practicing and showcasing skills among other things. They arrive today and are here with ice time all the way until the 22nd. Whether they use that ice time every day or decide to hit up the famous Banff night life remains to be seen. One thing that I think is pretty neat is that this Saturday, after their practice they will skate around with the entire BMH (Banff minor hockey-about 100 kids). So these young kids will get to lace em up and skate around with the whole team, minus any parents.

I am out of the loop as far as who is good and who to look for. I hear the kid that plays Division 1 is supposed to be pretty bad ass, but other than that I know nothing. If anyone in QSLS land (Matt Steeves) could shine some light on it for me, that'd be awesome! I hope everyone is having a great December thus far!! I wish I could be home in the motherland for festive alcohol consumption, but I will be holding down the fort out here. Remember to hit up St. Dunstans Christmas eve mass- classic! Oh and if the peeps in Calgary catch wind that the juniors are in town, we could end up with a lot of people at our Rec. Centre, so look for me on CBC/TSN. I'll be the one providing perfect ice so Team Canada has the confidence needed to crush the Ruskies!

Dearest QSLS Nation,

The QSLS Sub-Committe for the Appreciation of Nativity Timed Awesomeness (Q-SANTA)has begun planning of our annual holiday blitz. This time of year always seems to include a variety of Brothers and Sisters making their way back to Freddy Beach, and we want to start the discussion about when/where we are all going to get together.

Here are some of the annual events that we need to plan for:

1. Ball hockey game - This will take place at, or around, Queen Square. The date for this has changed over the years.
2. QSLS Awards Party - Dr. Throb Ragar has generously played host for the past few years. This has always proven to be a highlight of the season and has been taking place on the 27th or 28th.
3. NYE - Harris throwdown? Market? Party bus?

So, who will be around the homeland for the holidays? Helen and I just realized that it is impossible to withstand the pull of home and will be around between Christmas and NYE. Can't wait to share in a few Winter Warmers with you all!

Greetings Leisurites!

Last night the QSLS Canmore Chapter was in attendance as the Edmonton electro/dance band Shout Out Out Out Out dazzled the Canmore Hotel-known amongst the locals as simply "the Ho" The band has been laying low for the last year or so with a very modest tour schedule. Now with a new album on the horizon, the band has put on somewhat of a touring blitz, hitting places like Canmore for the first time ever.

Maybe it was the long weekend, maybe drugs were inexpensive that night, or maybe the Canmore locals know and appreciate when a pop/anti pop band like SO4 comes to town. For whatever reason, the Ho was packed full of people and filled with an energy I haven't really seen there before. I have SO4's first album Not Saying/Just Saying and it is a fairly solid electro album as far as electo albums go. However, as with many bands, that album does little justice to their live performance. Two drummers, 2 guys messing with Korg equipment and 2 or more guitarists including (when he wants to) the lead singer who sings exclusively on a vocoder.

I really appreciate this band, not just for their dancy, poppy, electric tracks. I appreciate the fact that they could tailor their music to be on the radio, but they don't. Its like they are saying Fcuk You to the music industry by not conforming. Not unlike how LCD Soundsystem doesn't make short dancy radio friendly tunes, but longer, sometimes comically lyrical tracks. The lead singer also keeps a very modest profile while singing by keeping his long hair over his face while he speaks/sings into his vocoder, not giving the crowd the love they want like a would be rock star would. Not your typical dance band for sure. If you have a chance to go see these guys, I highly recommend it. Their spastic energy is sure to please even the most non electro fan.

I have included a couple of videos shot from my iphone. The 8 minute one is the only song I know the name of "Chicken Soup for the Fuck You" It was their encore song and I know its long and choppy (the bass was literally shaking my hand.....and I was drunk), but if you can make it the around the 5 minute mark, its pretty neat to see the drummer on the left rally the crowd and go back into it. All in all, a great set. Enjoy!

Marion & Mark's Stop Motion Wedding

In the summer of 2010, Claire and I attended an awesome wedding in and around Esslingen, Germany. Somewhere into my 3rd or 4rth drink, the plate game was announced where a future wedding gift/favour could be pledged/won by the groom catching plates thrown by the bride with a few distractions. We also drove from the picturesque town out to Schloss Solitude for the ceremony and then to burg stettenfels in untergruppenbach for the party where said plate throwing occurred.

Our pledge was a stop motion video of the wedding, little considered at the time how much work this would be and how good at catching the groom was. After some initial difficulties in keeping actors fresh between takes, we came to have a great time making the finished work. Thus, Claire and I present our stop-motion video entitled Marion & Mark's Stop Motion Wedding - a labor of love. - Dan F.

Gute zeiten auf dem Oktoberfest!!!

In the fall of 1998 myself, Wolfie Smith, Deeker McLaughlin and El Gardshow descended upon the Oktoberfest in Munich on our great European adventure. The Oktoberfest proved to be a defining moment on that trip with smashed stein mugs, oompa bands, table dancing and more smashedness in general being the main (non) memories.

Fast forward 13 years later - I was told to be in Europe for work meetings towards the end of September and realized the weekend looked remarkably open, hence presenting the perfect opportunity for leisure. Not wanting to waste this opportunity, I managed to round up a few good friends who I met during my year of study in Montreal who happened to be living in Europe. The plan was hatched; a reunion set for Oktoberfest in Munich.

For the second time in 13 years, the Oktoberfest did not disappoint. From eating bratwurst sausages with saurkraut, to contemplating the merits of lederhosen rental, to drinking liter steins of good beer and to 'making party' with many new German friends, it was another great time. To quote one of my friends on the trip: "this is exactly how I imagined Oktoberfest would be." In true German style, the Germans efficiently delivered in 'making' a good party.

It was a good time, not a long time, and I hope to go back in another 13 years.

“The Barry Challenge” is an open invitation fight challenge issued by David “Animal” Barry, known for his submission skills, cardio and will to never give up in a fight (http://qslsblogcast.blogspot.com/2007/07/current-qsls-mma-middle-weight-champion.html) . The purpose of these challenges are to provide money for the Fredericton Food Bank and so that Dave can have fun beating up his friends. Challenges have been issued since Dave first made one in 2006 at the Smith-Bowes wedding. This was vs. Owen “Timmy” Marshall. This fight has become legendary with only a photo gallery (http://qslsblogcast.blogspot.com/2006/08/david-animal-barry-vs-owen-timmy.html) to remember the fight by and disputed over the years by Timmy Marshall up until this past June with Dave besting Owen in the rematch (http://qslsblogcast.blogspot.com/2011/06/backyard-bbq-brawl-doesnt-disappoint.html). Some of the challenge matches have become public events charging admission while others have remained private. Bets on challenges have reached as high as $40 to the winner of the match. Dave to this day remains undefeated in these challenge matches and has always provided all his winnings to charity.
Yesterday, QSLS agitator Daniel “DanF” Fitzgerald decided he would take the Animal up on the Barry Challenge. Their match was originally scheduled for September 1^st, 2011 to provide time for DanF to train for the match. Instead, DanF decided an impromptu match in Duke and Katie’s back yard was a better idea and challenged Barry on the spot. This after Barry had just completed his weight lifting routine for the day and had just put the weights down. Dan has taken the Barry challenge several times over the years and has come up short. In Memory of Dave Walker

Hello Brothers and Sisters,

It is with a heavy heart that the QSLS marks the passing of our dear friend Dave Walker. Dave passed away peacefully on Monday, August 8 after a courageous ten year battle with cancer.

Dave embodied much of what the QSLS stands for. He lived life on his own terms, and did so with one of the great all-time senses of humour. Dave's friends and family were lucky to have him around for as long as we did... and we loved every minute.

Friends should join in celebrating a life well-lived this week. Visitation will be Thursday, August 11 between 5:00 and 7:00, with a funeral service at 2:00 on Friday, August 12.

Cheers to you Davey Boy! We love you, and we're gonna miss you my friend.

Classified featuring David Myles: Day Doesn't Die

U2 and Arcade Fire bring 75 000 to Magnetic Hill

The QSLS was well represented at last weekend's giant party known as the U2 360 tour. The day started ominously as rain poured down hard and Johnner lost his wife. Thankfully the rain let up, Karina was found and everyone made their way to the big show as Arcade Fire played us in.

You could't get a better opening act than the Arcade Fire, their energy brought the crowd together and got everyone in mood to party (even those who had been lost earlier).
Once their set was compete a trip to the porta potty's was made to void blatters for the big trip down towards the stage and the creature that is known as "the claw." The claw is the stage show of the U2 360 tour and is truly and impressive sight to behold. Holding giant video screens and speakers which project in every direction, the claw makes all 75 000 fans feel they are a part of some giant spaceship music video.
The spaceship was set for take off as the lights went down and Bowie's "Space Oddity" rang through the crowd. The anticipation reached its height as the Bowie song morphed into the opening of "Even Better than the Real Thing" and the claw exploded in a burst of sound and lights.

The band continued through a series of songs classic album "Achtung Baby." From there the band went into their old and new tunes until they reached the second high point of the night, "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." The crowd sang along to the Joshua Tree hit but it wasn't until the song ended and Bono began the first verse of "The Ballad of Springhill" (a song about the mining disasters in the Nova Scotian town) that the crowd really showed their appreciation.

From that point on the band had the crowd in the palm of its hands. They took us back to space with a message from astronaut Mark Kelly (who is married to Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords who was shot in January) in what was truly a beautiful moment.

The show continued on with stadium rock songs like "Vertigo" which really is about as big a rock song as you can get and with lesser know songs such as Ms. Sarajevo, a song which celebrates beauty a midst tragedy.
The show reached its high point when Bono took his guitar to center stage and played the Leonard Cohen classic "Hallelujah" which flowed into "Where the Streets Have No Name."

The feeling in the crowd was something that cannot be put into words. The video does not do the performance nor the crowds response justice as the place absolutely went crazy throughout and long after the song was done.
As the show ended and 75 000 tired and muddy fans made their way back to reality I don't think there was a single fan who was disappointed. An amazing show that will be difficult for any act to top.

As some of you know Fiona and I recently emigrated from New Brunswick. So far things have be great, both of us have work and we have been using our free time to explore the different types of leisure in the area. The Georgian Bay and Niagara escarpment region has great mountain biking, lots of awesome hiking, climbing, and skiing. Now that we are somewhat settled we would like to send out an open invite to any who may be close by to come visit. We are only a 2.5 hour drive from downtown Toronto. So, let us know when you are coming and we will get a place ready for you.

Corked Wine Bar Opens

Fredericton's best new spot is now up and running. Corked, located at 83 Regent Street beside the Harvest Jazz and Blues office, has a great atmosphere, 24 different glasses of wine available and the best looking staff in town. Run by Meaghan Barry along with her friends and family, Corked is slowy building its reputation around town.

The beautiful decor and friendly staff gives both a class and comfortable feel. With 12 reds, 12 whites and 2 sparkling wines available by the glass and the bottle, Corked gives both wine beginners and connoisseurs a chance to find a glass or two that suits their taste.
If you are not a wine drinker the bar also offers spirits and beer as well. Eventually the menu will also include a few appetizers to go along with your drinks but for now the bar has peanuts to much on.
This Friday, Animal will be working the bar so feel free to swing on down after work for a drink. The bar opens at 4:30pm and stays open until 2am. Hope to see you there.

Fredericton Raceway Thursday Night

This Thursday July 7 at 7pm a QSLS crew will be descending upon the Fredericton Raceway on Smythe for some horse races and of course some gambling.

The legendary raceway grounds, which have been used since 1887, have hosted record breaking horses as well as Queen Elizabeth and her bumbling hump buddy Prince Phillip.

Any and all are welcome to join in the fun. We'll meet up at the Tim Horten's at 6:50 before we head over to the races.

1) Free Show in Officer Square tonight: Heat and Lights (Tim Walker's Folk/Pop Band) play this evening around 7:30. Looks like a beautiful day for some free music. Early show so it is easy to take the whole family.

3) Barry family wedding brings back Butchie! Butchie is back in town tonight and will be heading to St. John tomorrow for the festivities.

4) Food and Money donated to Fredericton Food Bank: About 25 pounds of food and a little chunk of change was dropped off at the food bank yesterday. All the food and cash was donated by QSLS members and affiliates in their support of the Backyard Birthday BBQ Wrasting. The volunteer staff at the food bank were very grateful for the help. Nice work everyone!

Backyard BBQ Brawl Doesn't Disappoint

It was all more than a bit rididuclous...but that was kind of the point. 4 grown ass men, the youngest of which had just turned 30 that very day, wrestling in a backyard bbq brawl. But it sure was fun and helped out the Fredericton Food Bank no less.

By 5pm a crowd of about 20 had assembled and soon they began to get restless for some action. So the 4 grown men put on their gear and got down to business.

Duke strutted onto the matt, patiently waiting for his friend to join him. When The Green Machine finally made his out of his dressing room the two men recieved instructions from the ref and the first match was underway.

Duke wasted no time initiating contact as he moved in as John grabbed his head looking for a guillitine choke. Duke had other plans as John was lifted high and slammed hard onto his head. Visibly shaken from the slam John worked to regain control of the match by wrapping his opponent with his legs.

After a scramble John was put down again only to catch duke in a triangle choke. Duke lifted John once again for a slam but this time Greener was able to maintain control of Duke and transfered the choke into a slick armbar which soon had Duke tapping before the crowd even knew it happened.

After the match Duke's arm was checked out and everything was where it should be. Greener had his bell rung a bit by the slams but after a few beers he was all sorted out.

Up next was the main event of the evening where Big O went head to head with Animal. After a brief feeling out period the two wrestlers engaged with Big O using his strength and balance to maintain top position. Big O rolled for a choke which was defended by Animal who moved to top control. Animal didn't last long as Owen got up and used surprising quickness to trip Animal. Animal rolled for an armbar which led to a scramble which found Big O caught from behind. Again Big O's power came into play as he shook off Animal and got to his feet. Tired and most likely feeling nautious Big O circled away simulatiously fighting off both Animal and his stomachs desire to vomit as the round came to a close.

Round 2 opened with another Animal takedown attempt stuffed by Big O and a choke attempt by the big man. Animal kept his composure and used a crafty trip to take O down and soon was free of the neck stretching headlock. Animal searched for an arm to pull off but soon realized the big guy's strength was going to be too much. As the fatigued big man powered his way to his feet Animal wrapped up a tight guillitine choke, ever the figther Big O attempted to push Animal off with a form arm shiver but Animal held on and Big O was forced to tap or go to sleep. Realizing that being choked unconscious is no way to spend a lovely summer afternoon, Big O tapped and Animal had his hand raised as the victor.

In the end, all the competitors and spectators had a great time. On top of a good BBQ and some fun matches we even manage to get some food and cash for the Food Bank. Next year we'll have some girls wrestle...that way we'll raise enough food to feed the city for years to come.

This Saturday June 4th at 3pm the fun kicks off out in New Maryland. The calm subdivision of Castle Acres won't know what hit it.

All are welcome at the fun filled afternoon of good eats, drinks and a bit of wrestling. A few burgers and maybe a game of basketball on the old backyard court will serve as the warm up. Then the real action starts as Duke takes on Greener. Following that match will be the main event: Animal vs Owen. Sparks will fly.

After the matches everyone will shake hands and get down to good old fashion partying and we'll send all of your asses packing around 8pm or so.

Important info:

When: Saturday June 4th at 3pm
Where: 34 Bradshaw, New Maryland (in the subdivision castle acres, 4th street on the right in Maryland)
What to bring: a non-perishable food item or small monetary donation for the Fredericton Food Bank

There will be some food and beers there so don't worry about bringing anything but yourself, your friends (and of course something for the food bank).

I need your help...I need your money. My cousin Sarah’s husband Jeff (born and raised in Fredericton) has MS. They also have two wonderful children, Will & Olivia. MS is a challenge for them every day and Sarah, being the super person she is, is trying to raise $10,000 for Halifax’s MS Walk which is held at the end of this month.

Brothers and Sisters,

Our esteemed organization has recently surpassed a great milestone. Some gadget that tech/brain guru DanF slapped on our beloved website has passed the 200,000 mark. I don't know if that's unique page views, nor do I know what a unique page view is; but I do know that the QSLS never needs too much of an excuse to celebrate.

Let's face it, this blog has been the only reason any of us gotten out of bed in the morning since 2006. That's right. Not your kids, not your significant others, definitely not your jobs. Your life has been to get out there do something interesting and then blog that shit. As JFK once said, "Ask not what leisure can do for you; ask what you can do with a beer in your hand."

The QSLS Committee on the Celebration of the QSLS (QCCQ) would like open a discussion regarding an appropriate way of recognizing our recent 200,000 somethings. Shall it be the traditional poetry contest? Best blog of all time vote? Or something new (QSLS Hall of Fame?) The QCCQ leaves it in the good hands of our membership to decide. NHL Playoffs begin today...

Greetings bloggers and leisurists!

Canada's great national sport begins its lengthy playoff run today and before we all become glued to our TV sets and playoff pools I just wanted to mention a few things that are tied into the playoffs, our sport and possibly even the pending election.

I have been listening to the 2009 album Supporting Caste, from the legendary Canadian punk group Propaghandi. Known for their fast hard punk riffs and controversial lyrics often centered around imperialism, capitalism, sexism, veganism and human rights violations to name a few. I don't want to review the whole album, but if you like punk and or conscious lyrics I suggest you steal it from a torrent because its a beauty.

The song in particular that I just can't get enough of is called "Dear Coach's Corner" Chris Hannah the lead singer wrote this song after he took his 9 year old niece to the CHL championships in Regina. During one of the intermissions in a tribute to our troops who fought so bravely they had a special show in which real actual troops rappelled down from the top of the arena with guns. His niece asked him why they had guns at a hockey game. He said he didn't know and basically just left at that moment.

"Dear Coach's Corner" is (as the song explains) a letter to Ron Maclean (because Don Cherry has slipped into complete dementia) asking for him to explain to his niece why they display some over the top nationalism on TV at hockey games. The Americans have been doing it for a long time now, and certainly not just with hockey, but I must say that when I tune into a CBC broadcast of an NHL game there is a lot of xenophobia, shout outs to the troops and nationalism going on. Anyways, like I said, I think its a great track, tight riffs and good lyrics. A proud Canadian hockey song!

Which brings me to my closer, Don "Grapes" Cherry. This playoff season what's the over/under on the crazy shit that will come out of Grapes' mouth? Has he completely lost his mind yet, or will CBC let him go long before that happens? Regardless, I expect we'll see some beauty comments about our brave soldiers fighting such an honorable war along with some hideous outfits. Remember if you don't want to stand behind our troops, feel free to stand in front of them.....lol

Anyways, thanks for reading and sorry if I beat a dead horse and told you all about something you already are completely aware of and now bored with. Please listen to the song if you haven't already. The first youtube clip of Don Cherry is the complete segment of the Coach's Corner clip Propaghandi used at the start of their song. I think it really illustrates just how mad Grapes is. Enjoy!

Leisure Review: Springtime Nature Walks

On the last weekend of March, Claire and I had the chance to experience nature at its finest as we walked through blooming cherry fields, along canals teeming ducks and the first newborn ducklings. The walking / nature enjoyment around Utrecht is quite good in the Utrechtse heuvelrug, but in the spring-time the Kromme Rijn ("Crooked Rhine", for its many bends) is a great alternative. This year's springtime blosoms predict a good harvest for the summer Cherry (kersen) festival, where homemade cherry ice-cream offers some sweet relief during the 29 kilometers it takes to get through the official route.

Claire wimped out this time a little over 26 klicks in and we bused it home after enjoying a drink at the Little Windmill (t Molentje) cafe on the outskirts of Wijk bij Duurstede. Despite not seeing as many baby sheep as expected, we are determined to return for the tasting festival later in the year, settling that day for lamb burgers curtesy of Albert Heijn.

This past weekend, we did a shorter, 5km walk along the German/Dutch border to the White Stone (Witte Stein), an area right on the border between Venlo and Nettetal, where people used to be excuted by having their heads bashed against a large white rock. This bluntest of instruments still adorns the entrance gate of a family restaurant located by the old smashing grounds. Dutch and German walkers (wandelaars) and equestrians enjoy the wooded shelters and paths, with little of the modern world except the occasional church tower or isolated asparagus field - the coming of which is presaged by blow-up asparagus balloons at the bigger farms in town. These can seem rather perverse if you're not used to the thick, white asparagus produced in great quantity around this region in the springtime.

Both walks were very nice, and in addition to an earlier walk to plant our Christmas tree in the woods outside Doorn are a great start for this year's 4-day march training.

QSLS Concert in Review: David Myles Trio at the Communitea Cafe

This past Monday March 28th and Tuesday March 29th the David Myles Trio graced Canmore, Alberta with their presence and played two very successful shows at the Communitea Cafe. The QSLS Canmore Chapter were fortunate enough to be in attendance for the Tuesday night show. Dave's good friend and Calgary native rising country/roots star T. Buckley opened the show for a very enthusiastic crowd. After a very "short" set break the trio took the stage opening with a humorous version of "Need a Break" In typical Dave Myles fashion the crowd gave their full attention and hung on his every word.

The trio played to a packed sold out show and the acoustics were spot on. Kyle Cunjak and Alan Jeffries played an outstanding show, providing exceptional support to Dave. Alan even sang his own song, although I didn't catch the name of it. I caught it on film and was planning on posting it, if youtube didn't take so long to upload video. It was very catchy and rhythmic, suited to Alan's play style.

After the show we hung out with the boys for a little bit for some pics and autographs. Hopefully the boys will return for the Canmore Folk Festival this summer and give the fest a new surge of excitement! All in all, it was a fantastic night and we were so glad to be able to be a part of it. If you're reading this boys, thanks a lot! Until next time...

The first of the preliminary matches for the June 4th Owen vs Animal superfight has been announced. The Duker has stepped up to the plate to take on Johnner in a match sure to have fireworks. This light-heavyweight tilt will showcase Duke's strength and slams against Johnner's jiu jitsu and his massive confidence in his abilities to do pretty much anything he wants like that time he drove his parents van directly into a concrete wall on purpose.

It all goes down on Saturday June 4th at 3:00pm at 128 Montgomery also known as Kate's place. Admission is by donation or nonperishable food item. All donations will go to Camp Rotary and all food collected will go to the Fredericton Food Bank.

Almost a year to the day, I made my return to Vancouver. Unlike last year’s Olympic shenanigans, this visit was a family ski mission. Upon arrival we were greeted with a fresh foot of snow. On Wednesday, Vancouver partner in crime Brother Burke, drove up to partake in the festivities.

The Martock legend on his snowboard and I on my skis, searched high and low for quality terrain amidst blizzard like conditions. We settled on mid mountain cruiser runs and numerous refreshment breaks...

To cap off the day, I took Burke to my traditional last run; “In the Spirit” a heavily gladed run with pockets of sweet white gold and "creek traps". Ol’Rubber Legs slogged his way through it, filling the air with ohhs, ahhs, and expletives. Splayed out helplessly in a heap of snow, he expressed his frustration. I wasn’t going to let him snowboard all day without a little challenge... I was lovin’ it. After all, I thought it was our last run together.

After some pops and an outdoor hot tub session, the wheels began to turn. Burcules was realizing how much awesomer a day on the hill is, than going to work. No pressure from us of course… Of even greater significance was the realization that he should be skiing. Jeff powered through two days worth of work on Thursday and made a return to the hill Friday.

Being the last day, we wanted to get some group skiing in so Jeff, my Step-Dad, and I joined my sister and her boyfriend who were already on the hill. Jeff revealed to me that this was the first time he had been on skis in 12 years (Jeff edit: my last skis were Rossi 200cm planks) For our first run we met up with my sister and boyfriend who claimed to have found a rather unexplored haven of powder.

Jethro’s face as he gazed down upon 2 feet of snow surrounding girthy tree trunks was gold. Nothing like dodging trees and barrel rolling (J: my catch phrase became “Ohhhhh...ughh....f**k.”) on your first run to get the old ski legs back... Had he not been a fearless champion, he did have a groomed run available as an alternative.

After a few beers at lunch and some fresh BC air, we returned to the slopes accompanied by Glen, a local ski guide and extreme skier. For our first run we hit Spanky’s ladder: a hike up and over a mountain ridge that provides access to a few steep bowls and out of bounds areas. The run started easily enough and we hit our first crossroad. Glen warned that it will be a challenging run involving a pretty sketchy traverse. Burkalurk sighed, looked at me and expressed his trepidation.

Being a Martock legend and adventurer extraordinaire, I knew Jeff had the foundation he would need. I also saw him link together 3 sweet turns earlier in the day… Consider him qualified! I told him it would be fine and I’d stick with him. Off we went...

After a few steep and exhilarating pitches, we began the traverse into the heart of the out of bounds area, passing precipitous cliffs and chutes along the narrow track. I noticed Jeff was a little quiet and no longer conversing with me as he had been earlier… Guess he was a little preoccupied with the traverse (J: I was f**king terrified). We finally arrived at our point of descent.

Save for Tuckerman’s ravine, this was probably one of the steepest pitches I had ever skied. A 20 foot wide chute packed with dense wind blown lay in wait. The Burkinator summoned his courage (J: I had no choice), dropped in, zipped straight across and came to an abrupt stop just shy of a rock face.

Rather than make a turn, he flopped over, lost a ski and sat wondering what the hell he was doing (J: I had absolutely no business being on that run). This was an experience of a life time; Adrenaline pumping, heart cranking, memory etching experience. JBizzle got up, pointed his skis downhill and pounded out some turns, rocking the rest of the run (called Calvin and Hobbes).

After reaching the ski out, we paused to look back at what we had done. The look in Jeff’s eyes was priceless (J: I couldn’t really speak for the rest of the afternoon and am sure I lost at least 2 of my 9 lives). I’m pretty sure it was one of the scarier things he had done in life. (J: correction - absolutely THE scariest). I was happy to have shared the experience with him and it still has me grinning ear to ear. Skiing Rules!

Smith Looking to Create Controversy in 3 on 3 World Street Hockey Championship

April 29th,30th and May 1st sees the World Street Hockey Championships visit Saint John, New Brunswick. The QSLS would like to gather a 10-man roster for the Uptown Showdown. QSLS members Bryden & Fiona Hamilton and Alex Bardsley have agreed to host out-of-town membership. Ferries run between Digby and Saint John on a regular basis (I’m looking at you NS), and a shuttle will be set up to pick up members flying in from Toronto on West Jet/Porter Airlines (Matt S). It’s time to put all the hard work and practice at Christmas to good use. And Smith – no open court hits.

QSLS Documentary Feature of the week

This weeks documentary is the newest BBC nature series called The Human Planet. If you haven't seen this series yet I strongly urge you to do so. Though definitely try to rent it or get it from the PC onto an HDTV.
I think it is my new favorite BBC doc series narrowly surpassing the "Life" series of 2010. It looks at how humans have adapted to live in all corners of the globe. The cinematography will blow your mind and the unbelievable things people must do just to eat, really puts into perspective how easy we've all got it. Highlights include the compressor divers of the Philippines, the lion chasers of Kenya, the fisherman of Cambodia and the behind the scenes look at the end of each episode. Enjoy

The Chara/Pacioretty Saga

A coach of mine once said, "hockey is a great game, not a nice game... chess is a nice game." The unbelievable speed and power of today's players makes the game thrilling to watch, and increasingly more dangerous to play.

The NHL's latest crisis has stirred a massive debate with some calling for Chara's scalp, and others (including the NHL head office) who feel that Pacioretty is merely a victim of circumstance. Air Canada has even threatened to remove their sponsorship if violent head shots are not addressed. If player safety isn't enough to pressure the league into action you can bet that risking massive sponsorship deals will. Don't forget, the NHL will soon be seeking a new TV deal in the USA, and it will not risk this crucial exposure if TV execs are squeamish about seeing concussions and broken necks being deemed fair play.

As to the Chara hit specifically, I feel there has been a miscarriage of justice. My gut reaction as a life-long Habs fan was outrage. The impact was disgusting. I wanted immediate revenge of the McSorley-on-Brashear type. Upon further reflection I have softened my stance somewhat. I think Carey Price's post-game comments summed it up very succinctly. He basically said that every player needs to be accountable for their actions on the ice at all times. Was Chara's intent to smash Pacioretty's head into the stantion? Probably not. But, that's what he did. All players need to be aware of their surroundings. Pacioretty was in a vulnerable position and Chara's ignorance to that fact does not excuse his actions.

There is plenty of blame to go around. NHL rinks should not have turn-buckles, and players need to avoid putting themselves in dangerous positions. But we can not blame the victim here. Chara, and all players, need to know that they will be held accountable for their actions. The NHL needs to address head shots immediately or risk alienating players, sponsors, and those who love the game.

Barcelona is hands-down my favourite European city and arriving here yesterday simply confirmed that belief. In addition to El Raval and the incredible restaurant Cal Pep, I would highly recommend being here on a day when FC Barcelona beats ANYONE. Their 3-1 win over Arsenal last night was particularly sweet because it propelled the club ('més que un club') into the quarter finals of the Champions League - not that I really have any idea what that means... Check out this "soccerhights" site (pretty sure they meant "soccer highlights"). They had me at "Barcelona are singing actually high-quality while Arsenal are receiving consequences too which mean this determination be a vast match."

I'll just describe it as very pleasant psychedelic pop music and it's good from start to finish. The second battle between The Prop and Animal has been scheduled for this June in Fredericton. This much anticipated rematch has been long talked about but finally a deal has been made between the two fighters.

In the first fight, Owie dominated with his strength and elbow in the throat technique only to be reversed into an armbar where he quickly tapped in submission.

Owen is back, this time taking 3 months to train for the battle in search of redemption. These 3 months and the battle itself will be documented on video and posted on this site.

Indeed, we live in times of tremendous and sweeping change, often hard to interpret just exactly what the f*&ˆk is happening. This video is the product of 5 years of research from a marketing trends and behavioral science research company out of Brazil. the film fuses anthropology, sociology, and cultural studies into a sleek interpretation of our world today. The 9 minute doc is well worth the watch, an excellent qualitative analysis, leaving you with a few ideas to think about and reflect upon.

Blast from the Past: 2010 QSLS Ski Trip: Le Charliveaux is for Lovers

A quick summary from last year's ski trip: cheese, h-icy conditions, cheese, great french beers, and of course local craft (not Kraft) cheese. We sought out the famous powder of Le Massif, but a thaw and cold snap made for some very fast choppy conditions; recless speed ensued.
Dan and Leigh made it up from Montreal and we had a magical day in Quebec City for the Carnival. MVP of the weekend was Bardo who didn't let a broken finger stop him from getting wasted mid-day and pass out on the couch. We also ate a lot of cheese.
